The Mining District is the string of towns east of Silver City along U.S. 180: Hurley, Bayard, Santa Clara and Hanover. They grew up around the Chino copper mine at Santa Rita, and the mine is still the district’s largest employer.

Hurley is the former company town, laid out on a grid with the old smelter at its edge; Bayard is the district’s commercial center; Santa Clara sits beside Fort Bayard, the 1860s army post that became a hospital.
